After 45 years of gathering together in friendly groups, creating and selling crafts to raise funds for the Garden, the Devonian Botanic Garden Crafters Association is winding down their operations.
Since 1972, members of the DBG Crafters Assocation have met at the Garden from spring through Christmas, busily making pressed flower creations, floral arrangements, candles, cards, potpourri, lotions and many other products, then selling the fruits of their labour at their Crafters Workshop, all in support of projects and programs at the Garden.
Through grants, raffles and sales of their handcrafted items, the Crafters raised close to $2 million for the Garden over the years. The long list of Garden projects and programs that benefitted from the Crafters support includes building projects, equipment purchases, development and maintenance of garden areas, children’s education programs and plant records management software and much more.
“The Garden as we know it today would be a very different place without the incredible support we’ve had from Crafters’ volunteer members over the years,” said Lee Foote, DBG Director. “Anyone who has taken a tour of the Garden on one our tram carts, enjoyed an event at the Pine Pavilion, strolled on a brick pathway or spent a week in our children’s Green School program is seeing the efforts of the Crafters.”
In recent years, as members aged and new members were hard to find, the Crafters were faced with a dwindling volunteer workforce, all while growth at the Garden increased demand for space. This led to a decision by the Crafters to cease operations after a final clearance sale during the December 2016 Luminaria event. A farewell celebration honouring the Crafters was held at the Faculty Club on the University of Alberta campus in November, 2016.
“We have all enjoyed our time volunteering at the Garden,” said Crafters President Jean Maffret. “We wish the Devonian Botanic Garden continued success and growth and will watch it with pride in our hearts knowing that part of it was achieved with our help.”
