Luminaria event sells out for first time

For the first time, the annual Luminaria event at the Devonian Botanic Garden has sold out. Thanks to steadily growing attendance in recent years, a new advance-only ticketing system, and added event features, tickets sold in record time, say organizers. The Garden made changes to ticketing, parking
and entry procedures, in response to a huge attendance in 2015, which saw long traffic lineups along the highway and an overwhelmed shuttle system. “We want to maintain the serenity of Luminaria, which has become a tradition for so many people who enjoy the simplicity of fresh country air, candlelight, cider and song by the bonfire, in a season that is so often hurried and harried,” said Garden communications coordinator Kerry Mulholland. “To make sure our guests have a safe, enjoyable experience, we had to make some changes and control the number and flow of visitors to the event.” To achieve this, the Garden instituted an advance-only ticket purchase system. Patrons chose a two-hour time slot for theirvisit, and selected a parking option from one of two free shuttle locations (in nearby Devon or from the University of Alberta campus in Edmonton), or from limited paid parking at the Garden. “We’re pleased that we can offer, for the first time, a shuttle location in Edmonton. We’re hearing from patrons who have never been able to come before because they didn’t have a way to get here. Now they can. We’re going to monitor how it goes this year, and next year we may be able to offer other park-and-ride locations as well.”

“We’re so pleased with the positive response from our patrons. They’re definitely indicating that this event matters to them, and has become an important part of their holiday season. Given the demand for tickets, we are already considering our options for expanding the event in future years,” said Mulholland.
In addition to a stroll through the thousands of candles lining the pathways of the Kurimoto Japanese Garden, visitors can expect the return of favorite Luminaria experiences like free apple cider by the bonfires, glimmering Snow Sprites, ice sculptures, strolling a capella singers, the “Bonsai Ballroom”, and the opportunity to light a candle in honour of a loved one in Memory Lane. New for 2015, there will also be turkey stew, vegetarian chili and hot chocolate available for purchase, a straw bale maze for little ones, and a Wish-Upon-A-Star-Tree for visitors to decorate with their hopes for the future.

Located in Parkland County, 5 km north of Devon on Hwy. 60, the Devonian Botanic Garden is only 15 minutes southwest of Edmonton.
